My name is Smritika Isaac, a VI year law student in Tamil Nadu National Law School, Trichy. I have interned with various advocates, firms and NGOs that dealt with a wide range of cases. I am an active participant in working towards a social cause and have worked with organizations such as SAVE (Society Against Violence in Education) and Teach For India to promote quality education and safe educational environment for children from all sections of society.
The legal system has provisions for Mediation and more than 1/3rd of the population is unaware that it is an effective and simple alternative. My main objective is to empower people to demand justice and to equip them with the knowledge and means to attain it. Chennai and Trichy are the two cities in which with the help of the Legal Aid Committee, students and friends, we can organize awareness drives, conduct seminars, public lectures, radio talks, put up social media content, street plays, interactive activities and display eye-catching posters. Rural areas and villages are one of the target groups that lack awareness the most. Pamphlets are effective in spreading information on the FAQs of Mediation. But in my experience pamphlets are often cast away, adding to the litter on the streets. An alternative would be innovative bookmarks that contain all the required information, that also act as keepsakes.
Further to cultivate a stronger ADR culture in law colleges we can organize mediation training programs, competitions and sessions by eminent personalities.
